Uber drivers classified as workers by Employment Tribunal


On 28th October 2016, the Employment Tribunal ruled that drivers providing ride-hailing services using the Uber app should be legally classified as “workers” – not self employed contractors. As such, they are entitled to certain employment rights, including:

Although Uber is appealing the employment tribunal ruling, if they lose they may have to pay compensation and holiday pay to the Uber drivers who lodged the claim. This will also open the potential for compensation to other Uber drivers working in the UK.
